I’ve quit playing AoT competitively completely. I may play the odd team game with KS members but don’t expect to see me playing AoM anytime soon. The game has become far too lame and really isn’t about skill in any way shape or form, it’s all about abusing imballances in the game design the best of your ability. I find this type of gameplay too repetitive and not very rewarding, as well I don’t feel that the community in and around AoM is very solid anymore, most of the level-headed and truly helpful experts have long since left the game. If you look at most of the “experts” now they are all very full of themselves and very few actually try to help the community unless it will give them something in one way or another. I must admit the draw of money for playing games is a pretty nice one, but to be perfectly honest I have better things to do with my time at this point than to try to be competitive at a game that really doesn’t require a whole lot of skill (at least by my definition of what skill is).
For those interested I’ve been working at Relic entertainment for the last several months and the first game that I’ve helped work on has recently released a public beta. If you want to sign up for the beta go here, it’s an RTS set in the Warhammer 40k world. Anyways check it out if you like, I sometimes pop online while I’m at work to play against beta testers to see what exactly is going down you might catch me there…. then again you might not hehe.

Again mostly in Zeus but there is also a Loki and Poseidon game, hope you enjoy.

Loki: 2v2 Myself(Loki) and Grit(Gaia) vs. Myll_Pawn(Thor) and Myll_Erik(Zeus) on Tundra.

Erik goes for a hoplite/minotaur rush against me, however he does it just a bit too early, if he had massed up even 4 more hoplites the result easily could have been much different. However he does it again a few minutes later, only this time with a whole lot more hoplites, he almost ran me out of the game as I only had 1 ox-cart left and not enough wood for a TC (not that Grit couldn’t have tribbed me), but after that his partners weak economy (due to doubles) just couldn’t keep up and it was only a matter of time before Grit ran them both over.

A lot of really good double teams gave us a huge advantage as they never seemed able to co-ordinate their attacks at all.

His very forward build backfires on him after restoration kicks in, I love that GP.

I honestly don’t know why anyone would waste as many resources as he did teleporting towers all over the place but it certainly didn’t help him.

Very close game, he does a good job of raiding with a couple of centaurs and playing defensively, however I force him into a cease fire fairly early on and manage to take over an important TC because of it.

I go for a bit of a different strategy here by going up very late and then massing up hoplites with a few minotaurs thrown in, however his ancestors eclipse manages to take out a lot of villagers, will my economy be able to keep up with hoplite hoarding?

I played this one kind of poorly at the start, I didn’t realize how important that middle TC was (due to the gold around it) until just the slightest bit too late, once he got control of that TC it was all downhill.

This is a pretty tight game, if he had paid attention to the layout of the map a little bit better I would have lost for sure, but he let me gather gold in a fairly obvious place for too long and I was able to take advantage of that plus Zeus superior late game army.

He goes for an early expansion and manages to win the early fighting, however he made the mistake of letting me get minotaurs out too easily (good relic) and didn’t press his advantage quickly enough.

Centaur strangle!!!! It’s been a long time but things work out pretty well as I’m able to suppress any expansion by him for a very long time, after that my superior economy goes on auto cruise.

This is definitely a game of missed opportunities, if I had just run after the initial villager fighting this game would have been all but over, as it is I made mistake after mistake and he boomed his way back into it.

I posted up a bunch of new games, mostly zeus but as well there is an Odin and a Gaia game (which are both team games). As well I posted a bunch of recs on the 15th for those of you who didn’t notice.
I have a question for you now, with my new set-up I’m able to double post by putting the same topic in several categories at once, would you be interested in me setting up a seperate set of links for the gods which I would then put my opponents civ into? That way you could easily find all the games I play against an Isis opponent for instance without having to filter thru all my other games (not that most of them aren’t vs. Isis) and looking thru all the civs.
Anyways let me know what you think.

vk wolf really gets rolled over here, and with no help forthcoming it’s only a matter of time before the whole team falls, not a great game, not even sure why I’m posting it but I guess people like Gaia recs.

Grit does an awsome job of putting the hurt on General and all seems to be lost as I can’t hold two on my side while Teddy tries to help General, but never fear time for Ragnarok is near. Will it be enough?

He plays pretty well even after I get him back on his heels early on, I think I went at his main base a little too hard a little too early when I could have easily just played a game of gold control to win.

There are some pretty good fights in this one, but all it really took was one swift attack somewhere Kevin wasn’t expecting it to gain the edge I needed.

He lets me get away with an awful lot of things in this one, I think the only thing that really kept him in it for so long was the fact I forgot to get my medium upgrades!!!

He puts up some pretty good attacks in this one and really had me on the ropes for much of the game. I really have to get off of my fixation with Hippikon they really aren’t pop effective.

Pretty interesting game, I sort of learnt from my previous game and managed to hold out long enough to get to mythic, will I be able to come back from 4 tc to 2 with a titan out there against me?

After foiling his early rush I manage to push him back for a little while. Unfortunately a couple of key mistakes in my strategy really cost me.

He goes for a rather interesting strategy against a greek player and it actually works fairly well. Unfortunately for him he forgets a couple small details that I always have in the back of my mind.

I posted a bunch of new games, mostly in Zeus but there is also one Poseidon game in there. As well you may have noticed the site has undergone a slight upgrade, it should be loading much much faster (I’ve found that it does anyways) as well there are new post indicators/new comment indicators which is kinda handy.

I made a bit of a mistake fighting him a bit too hard early on, however I pulled my army back before it was too late. A couple of raiding mistakes also almost cost me the game, however I thought I handled things pretty well for the most part.

I really played this one poorly, I had the food sources available to build up a decent army but instead decided to go for a boom. Bleh he kept me on my heels quite well this game.

Not a bad game, we both made a lot of small mistakes as we were both fairly rusty but in the end I think it’s probably a pretty entertianing game to watch.

Some good teamwork on our part (after the first 10 min anyways) really gave us a good advantage and allowed us to come back from a point where things weren’t looking so good.

I do a really slow Classical for some reason (think I messed up on food) and it really really hurts me. This causes a very drawn out and not too exciting game :(.

I had no real game plan in this game and it really shows. I build a bunch of military but don’t do much with it, sometimes I feel so rusty it’s not even funny.

Not that I’d suggest watching it however. I usually just do my searches on ?vs? This is the first time I ever got pitted in a 3v3 by doing so. I’ve been in several 2v2’s but never anything like this. One thing you can learn from this game though is that if your partner resigns right off the start delete his stuff and steal his sheep :).

Normally I don’t like to use Titans in 1v1 games, however he didn’t leave me a whole lot of choice in this one, I really hate towers.

I had to re-install again and ended up losing a bunch of recorded games unfortunately. As well in two days I’m moving to a new city and likely won’t be able to play AoM online for at least the next few weeks, therefore there won’t be any new recorded games, sorry. I’m starting a job with Relic entertainment out in Vancouver, and depending on how everything works out I may or may not continue to play AoT, I hope to keep playing but no promises :).

They go for the quick tc grab in early classical, but that doesn’t last for long as we managed to split their defense a couple of times and simply have better teamwork than them. While teddy started out strong his mouse broke down partway into the game so he really couldn’t micro a lot after that which would be why he sucked so bad in the late game :D.

Three in Zeus and one in Set. There are a couple of decent ones in there. I have yet again reached higher and higher with my rating having hit another highest rating for myself (not ranking I’ve been higher several times) in the expansion pack. I hit a little bit of rating decay today which is why I was out of the top twenty for a short time, didn’t expect the decay as I had played within the time period, oh well. I’m finding Zeus to be a pretty good civ to use overall, however he does have his weaknesses it’s just a matter of making sure you’re opponent can’t play into those weaknesses.

Not a bad game after he loses all of his fishing he manages to fight back rather nicely to make a game of it. However he left an opening for me to take advantage of it and of course I did.

He makes a key tactical error early on with his fishing and it gave me enough of an edge that I wasn’t going to lose this game easily. Go Zeus power go!

This guy plays random god and seems to consistently be in the top 20, very impressive. His play in this game and the second game I played against him didn’t show his true skill probably.

It’s been a while I know, sorry for the lack of updates in the last two weeks. I was planning on updating near the end of last week, however I ran into some computer problems and wasn’t able to fix them too easily because someone had borrowed an important piece of software that I needed. Just today I hit my highest AoT rating ever of 1910 using none other than Zeus. All of the new games posted can be found in Zeus, Poseidon, Oranos and Gaia, most of the games are Zeus and I think there are some pretty good ones in there. As well I have this Random Game Pack from before my computer troubles. I’m not sure entirely what is in there and I don’t have the time to check them all out and repost them so this will have to do. As well don’t forget to visit my new MFO forums which will soon have an updated copy of most of some of my strategy articles posted on it as well as some other things such as the micro test etc.

Be warned VERY long game. Good start from me but I spend too much time without getting any land buildings up which really hurts me. Couple spoilers after this so stop reading if you want.
After my failed attempt to take down his titan (was really meant to delay him more than stop him completely) he said GG to me as if I should resign or as if he had the game won. Anyways about 30 minutes later after he took over my 3rd TC he yet again said GG to me. People like this kind of make me mad. It was a gg but that’s not why he said it, he said it because he thought I was dead and therefore I should have resigned.

If you looked at my Zeus games you’ll see I played jk_Dean…. as mentioned there he has a complaint for every game. This time it was building spamming. I really don’t like playing this guy anymore.

This game made me laugh. After every game Dean plays he has some excuse or another this time it was “stupid free MU". Yup that’s right a guy who gets ancestors eclipse as his GP’s is complaining about free MU. Kind of funny I thought.

At the start of the game he said to me “lucky you got this map". Hmmm seems to me that if I had been any civ other than Zeus it would have been lucky for him to have gotten the map. I just love people like this, pick the best civ then complain when I get a map that suits my civ somewhat.

You’ll find new games in Odin, Thor, Loki, Ra, Isis, Hades, Poseidon, Zeus, Oranos, and Kronos. There are some pretty good ones in there including a few good 2v2 games. I’ve also added a link to the Myll clan in my links at the bottom of the page, go check out their site if you’ve got a minute. This isn’t the big update I was talking about but it is a big update for those wondering :). Hopefully thursday there will be bigger update, not sure how exciting the news will be to all of you but I know for me personally it’s pretty exciting.
Spotlight Games
3v3 Myself as Odin, KS_Zorgile(Thor) and KS_General(Oranos) vs. ShockKk(Gaia), NerVe_VeNom(Odin) and Au_WeapoN(Odin) on Ghost Lake
This is a pretty cool game. Well worth spotlighting, General thought we were done for for a very long time in this one, however my gameplan worked pretty well overall I think.

Not often you get a good 4v4 that actually goes through, but this one is a prime example. I thought after me and Zorgile were pushed back into his base that we were done for, but things quickly started to turn around as 3 GP’s won us 3 forward tcs. First forest fire, then shockwave, then frost which gave me a huge amount of pop to deal with (probably should have given one of the TCs to zorgile) and Black a very small amount of pop to work with.

I wasn’t sure exactly what they were going for (double tc etc etc), but I decided fairly quickly that taking over that central TC would give me a pretty good advantage over my guy. Destiny came in with the siege and things were pretty much decided.

I think forcing him to use cease fire earlier than he wanted really hurt him in this one, he could never really get a foothold on a TC after that which gave me an edge.

Not sure why but the viewpoint of this game is from his POV. Perhaps it’s because of the watcher involved? I’m not entirely sure. Anyways a few good raids really kept me in this game after he went for a 2 TC start.

Here’s a good example of how playing random civ to get your experience with all the civs really sets you back. It’s a pretty sad game on my part as I really don’t do a whole lot to him and fall into the same problems I do every time I play egypt, not enough buildings.

After a quick bit of scouting it was pretty apperent how important that middle TC was going to be, which would be why I went for it so fast. He was kind of mad that his tornado didn’t stop my TC from going up, but at that point I think I had enough of an advantage that so long as he couldn’t get that TC up I was going to win.

I think I needed a few more upgrades earlier on in this one. I had the tc advantage and the adavantage in numbers but I just couldn’t keep enough troops out there because they were getting killed too fast. A few more TA would have been nice in my flaming weapons as well. I think this game kind of shows why axemen own norse so badly…. they create waaay faster than my replacement troops can so what I really needed was 2x as many buildings as him, too bad there wasn’t really room for that near my base.

Poor unit selection hurt me somewhat in this one, more axemen less spearmen would have really been great. But I think the biggest problem was that there wasn’t a lot of good natural hunting that I could easily get to early on. Wish I had found those elephants south of my base.

I really should have done a better job walling early on. As well getting my tower upgrade asap would have been very beneficial. Going with a mix of hoplites/hippikon right off the start is another thing that might have saved me, but who knows. Hmmm coulda used some more raiding early on too hehe so many mistakes no wonder I lost.

I really played this one poorly, instead of turning so many units into Heroes I really should have just building whored him as much as I could, the cost would have been the same but the effect would have been in my favor I think.

I go for a speedy Water build this time ending up with a 4 min Loki rush. The double sided attacks really seemed to hurt him a lot, as well the distraction on water was a bit too much for him. I’ll get the hang of Loki yet.

Pretty interesting game it goes back and forth for a little while in classical until I finally clue in on what his strategy is.

Here’s a good example of a cookie cutter player with a high rating. I don’t know why he would try such a useless rush against an Oranos player as Oranos can really handle it easily. But hey if cookie cutter gets you that high I guess keep using it.

He does a lot of good raiding in this one, however he lets me take a key middle tc and that’s really the thing that gives me my victory.

Man Ragnarok really saved me here. I wonder 3 tc vs 3 tc how I would have even stood a chance against him. All he had to do was spam out Hypatists and there was nothing I could do to break thru his defenses hardly.

I played this one a bit silly. Sure it’s not a great idea to rush hard against a Hades player, but I knew he was going for double tc, so I should have tried to prevent him from getting all 3 of his tcs.

A few of his troops went the wrong way on him in the middle and that really hurt him. Other than that just some gold control by me. He gave up a bit early I think, but zeus vs. thor is a tough matchup in the late game.

I uploaded a bunch of new games on the 21st as well as some more tonight. You can find new games under Odin, Oranos, Gaia, Poseidon, Zeus, Hades, Set, Ra, and Isis. There are a few really good games in there worth watching and a few that aren’t so pretty on my side of the coin, oh well :).
Ummmm there should be a much bigger update coming by the middle of next week with a bigger announcement, but for now I’ll keep it under wraps, enjoy the recorded games.

This game made me laugh. It ends rather quickly but afterwards he couldn’t understand how I got the army that I did so early. So I said to him “there’s a reason I was top 10 with Oranos before I stopped playing him exclusively", he responded back with “I am top 10 with Oranos” Turns out this guy is fortune on another of his sub 1800 smurf nicks. Kind of fun beating the crap out of him so easily.

Pretty decent game overall, the amount of wood I had available got me a little bit worried, that plus the fact the trade routes were kind of crappy meant I only had one choice against a Zeus player, Wonder. I probably should have stopped building the wonder to kill his titan gate though :(.

Well if you look at the map you’ll probably see his gold isn’t really any further than mine (the first gold mine that is), he just didn’t do a very good job of holding onto it.

The power of the Wadjet againt norse. There really isn’t a whole lot Norse can do against these suckers once there’s any sort of army in front of them. Wadjets attack is just too high and their self healing ways make them easy to keep alive for a long time.

I don’t know what all of you think, but since I’ve started playing random civ I’ve found all my games to be more enjoyable to play and probably to watch as well. In the last few days I’ve had way too many games that would have normally gotten a spotlight, however I can’t spotlight em all so the ones I did spotlight are simply put amazing, if ever there was a rec game to watch the first two I list in the spotlights section have got to be the ones.
Spotlight Games
Myself as Odin vs. Da_Oli_FR as Kronos on Anatolia
Easily the most amazing game I’ve ever played in, you probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you how this one went.
Myself as Zeus vs. Asia own_u as Kronos on Medit.
I prematurely named this the game of the year in my original posting. I now take that back as the game listed above this one is even better…. not to say this game isn’t great, because it is. Well worth watching.
Myself as Zeus vs. pG_Fire_de as Ra on Oasis.
Boy I’ve been having a lot of luck with Zeus lately vs. some very tough experts. This was a really cool game, I liked his villager attacks, lots of fights on both sides of the map very intense, worth a watch.

I spent way too long in classical fighting him on his ground, I’ve really got to learn just to raid and leave it at that. Aside from that I just lost too many villagers early on and it really hurt me bad.

A pretty cool game, Rockstar gets me with a good shifting sands early on that gives him a pretty good edge, however I never give up easily and manage to raid his gold pretty well with the troops he shifted away. After that it’s just big battle after big battle.

Apperently mercs are the way to go in egypt wars :(. Kind of sad really, guess I should learn to use them more. I went classical too early this time just to see if it could be done (hunting dogs+2 monuments starting) other than that it’s a pretty cool game.

I know it’s been a while since I’ve done a full update, but I have been posting games on a fairly consistent basis as I play them for the most part. For those who haven’t noticed my KS_Josey_Wales name has dropped out of the top 20 rather dramatically. It’s simply because I stopped playing rated on that name. I decided that I much prefer playing random civ at this point so I switched over to my KS_Random_Wales name which has never had a game on it that wasn’t random civ. Hmmm to be honest I can’t believe I won this game, well worth watching I think.

This is a pretty good game from the triple random league, I thought for sure when he got isis (ranked #7th and 10th with them) that I was probably done for…. things turned out a little bit different though.
2v2 Myself as Oranos and DBD_Mack vs. FoD_MsDolls(Kronos) and FoD_AssHole(Loki) on Midgard
This is a pretty cool game, I thought we had no chance in this one early on, but things seemed to turn around all of a sudden. This is probably the most intense game I’ve played in for quite a while, a definite spotlight.

This is game two from our rts league match vs. UW clan, they picked the map and immediatly I knew they would go for a wonder win. So we picked all the civs that would give us the opportunity to get to their side of the map to cause them plenty of problems. Ever see a player delete a titan on purpose? Here’s a game that’s definitely got it all.

She goes no fishing at the start and no fast rush which rather surprised me to be honest. I think going all raiding vs. atlanteans can work fairly well, I just messed it up a little bit at key points.

This is a pretty cool game overall I think. Check out shockwave actually stopping a tc from being built, wasn’t sure if it would work but it was pretty cool. Very good game I think.

This is a pretty good game from the triple random league, I thought for sure when he got isis (ranked #7th and 10th with them) that I was probably done for…. things turned out a little bit different though.

Home: NW tournament a go…..

Basically everything is set up that needs to be set up for the tournament. There are still a few things that are subject to change, but hopefully everything will be ironed out by this weekend. You can find the tournament details here, thanks to NorseWars.com for the use of their forums for this tournament. Things probably seem a little bit rough, but this is my first tournament afterall and I don’t have a whole lot of resources at my disposal, hopefully everything will go smoothly.
In the last week or so I’ve uploaded plenty of games for your viewing pleasure including a couple of spotlight games. If I get more time tonight I will also post any remaining games on my hard-drive tonight.

I think everything is ready to go for the tournament just about.
The brackets are already up, since the bracket making thing I used doesn’t allow too long of names I am just using team numbers instead of everyones names, so to find out who you have to play you’ll have to look back and forth. Sorry just a way for me to save time and confusion over ESO names. I’m pretty sure there are no duplicate names but if there are let me know, because a lot of people seem to have signed up several times and I might have missed one of those.

The tournament will officially start this coming saturday with the first round ending the following Sunday night. Each round will take 1 week to complete guaranteed! This means the tournament will take 6 weeks to complete. I’m doing it this way because I’ve found in the past that if you have a 1 day tournament too many people can’t make it and the tournament would only end up with less than half the teams participating. The best way I can think of to make guarantee that the tournament is done on time is by doing the following; Every week I will set a time for sunday afternoon where every team who has not yet played their game for the week must show up. Any teams that do not show up (be it one of the teams in a match or both of the teams). I can’t guarantee this way to be fair all the time because maybe not everyone can make that time and perhaps they tried real hard to get their game in during the week, but this is the way it will be done. All I can say is that you should never let your opponents know you can not make the final meeting time for the week because if you let them know that all they have to do is show up on that final time to claim their win. Now I am willing to make acceptions to the rule. If your opponents appear to have made absolutely no effort to get the game in, but do show up in the final day for the win (or neither of you show up) and you show that you have made some effort to get the game scheduled, I will use my discretion as to who to advance in the bracket. The biggest thing here is that I want the games to be played, I want there to be an official winner, and I want the tournament to end on time, so by setting up this official time each week (depending upon my own schedule of course) it guarantees that the tournament will not be moderated by the fact that one team made way more posts than the other team did.
I’ve decided for simplicities sake to make this a single game single elimination tournament, the finals and semifinals however will be best of three. I’ve also decided to use NW version 6.0 which recently came out and takes care of a bunch of the imballance issues that were a problem before. The map size will be set to normal for all games. Everyone should have recieved an email letting them know about the tournament, however if you are a person who signed up with no partner to begin with, and you can not contact your partner then by all means send me an email letting me know what the deal is, hopefully I can set you up with someone else who is having the same problem.
All rules are subject to change at my discretion, any team may be disqualified at my discretion.

A pretty decent game, just goes to show how unimportant water can be sometimes. The real key to this one though was having his army on one side fighting off my tc grab attempt while another full army came at him from his front side to take out his second tc.

Pretty interesting game actually as he does some really good raiding and I do an awful lot of counter raiding, not many big army vs. army fights to be seen but still interesting.

Poseidon: 1v1 vs. jk_shibby as Kronos on Oasis.

This is a pretty decent game showing how it’s possible to control the flow of the game so long as you have the speed advantage.

Loki: 1v1 vs. CR_Nemesis as Set on Medit.

A somewhat interesting game, I haven’t really played a lot of loki on water maps so I’m not sure what the other experts do on this map, but I thought things worked out fairly well.
