Home: AOE 3 demo released.

In my opinion this demo seems to be severly lacking in a few areas. Now I don’t expect a perfect product at this point, however this demo does seem to be severely lacking, especially compared to other pre-release demo’s of RTS games over the past year. I posted some of the following on AoTS but I’ll post a bit more here.
There’s an awful lot that feels far from complete. The UI is really horrid at this point. For starters it’s really huge without actually providing much information. The bottom UI takes up nearly 1/3 of the screen, they could have easily cut it down some no problem. On top of it being huge though there’s some important information missing…. like population limit. You have to click on a seperate tab to see the damage/stats etc.
I just seriously hope they redo the UI before final release because it is in a very very sad state right now.
The home city system seems kinda silly….. basically people who play more will always have the advantage over people who can’t play as much (in the beginning anyways). But new players to the game a year after it comes out will have troubles learning the game because they won’t be able to do the strategies that people with a full deck of home city cards can do. It seems like it’s meant to be an anti smurf system, but this doesn’t seem like the best solution.
The random treasure spots around the map…. this reminds me too much of creeps in WC3, at least they’re random in this so people won’t be able to pre-form strategies around getting certain ones first etc. Creeps IMO were the absolute worst feature of WC3 but ES seemed to like it for some reason, this one really disapoints me.
Another thing that really bugged me was not being able to rotate the map, or at least I couldn’t find a way to do so. Rotating is far more useful than zooming in and out is. I had a lot of troubles seeing the supplies etc that I called in using my experience points, and even more troubles selecting them with villagers.

Just thought I’d make a post and maybe try to update this page every once in a while.
I’m not really sure what to write about in regards to WoW but I’ll give it a go anyways :).
As most of you know right now I’m playing World of Warcraft, and not a whole lot else, so I thought I’d give a bit of detail for those of you into both RTS and WoW AND still read this page lol.
Anyways I’ve been playing WoW now since january or so, and I’ve been playing on the Boulderfist server since february with my brother KS_Batman, his wife (obviously batgirl?), and a few former AoM players such as Nerve_Druid, KS_Nike, Simie, their friend brandon whose AoT name I don’t know, and several vagabonds (lion, neggy, mojo, ben, sin). Anyways we formed a guild which eventually split apart with the vaga’s leaving and the rest staying. The details aren’t really important there just thought I’d give you some background.
Anyways I’ve currently got a 60 priest, 60 druid, 60 rogue, 40 warrior, and a bunch of alts below 20(too much time on my hands since being on sick leave for a while).
Enough about that I guess I’ll just post about my overall experience in WoW compared to that of the Age series.
The biggest difference I’ve found in the communities is that there is an awful lot more no name people. The community isn’t really any larger than the AoM one (on a given server that is), however anyone with enough time can reach the “top ranks” of the game without having the least bit of gaming skill in them. Therefore it becomes a real task to figure out who actually knows how to play the game and who has just put in their time and will likely mess up any efforts you put out. Since there is no real way of telling how skilled a player is until you play with them in a difficult situation you can literally group with someone in a lot of different situations and not tell they suck at most things.
For the most part people run instances (dungeons with groups of people that are seperate from the rest of the world) in groups 2x the amount that is intended so you really can’t tell how good or bad a player is until you do a smaller run with them for the most part (unless they’re really bad and make a lot of really stupid mistakes that kill the group). If you compare that to the RTS communities it’s pretty easy to tell what your partners are good at very quickly. This is likely one of the more frustrating parts of the game, you’re not always with group members who are of the same skill (or even near to it) and it can be quite frustrating.
On the other hand WoW really doesn’t take a great deal of “skill” to be good at. All you really need to do is have a little brain power and you’re good to go as long as you don’t have to fight another human being in which case strategy does start to come into play.
Another big difference in the communities is the whole guild vs. clan thing. Clans and guilds are in theory supposed to be the same sort of thing, but in reality tend to act very differently IMO. The guilds in warcraft that want to pwn up the end game stuff have to have well over 60 members in order to be able to function properly. Compare that to the elite (and non elite) clans of AoM that tend to be anywhere from 5-30 members in general. This creates a very different atmosphere, in general people in clans get along with each other, enjoy playing with each other and tend to have the same sort of aproach to the games they play as each other. However the guilds in WoW tend to keep people in them whether they’re jackasses, loot whores, or whatever just simply because they fill the role that is needed in the guild gameplay-wise (right type of character etc). What I’ve seen happen a lot of times is people allow cheaters, lamers, jackasses etc to remain in their guild (without any reprimand whatsoever) just simply because of the fact they are able to do their job well enough to warrant their need in the end game content.
Just simply because of the way things work guilds who are interested in doing everything in the game don’t always end up being friends nescessarily, just aquaintances working towards the same goal. Sure some online friendships form I’m sure, but for the most part it’s a group of people working towards a goal, more like a company than the standard Age of clan tend to be. This doesn’t really apeal to me, so I’m sticking with my relatively small guild of people I know pretty well and like to play with (for the most part….. nike is a jerkstore what can I say).

I haven’t posted for a while so I thought I would just to let any of you who still visit this site what I’m up to.
As you all know I went to work for Relic Entertainment in Vancouver BC last march. I was on a one year contract which ended and wasn’t renewed for personal reasons. So I’m back in Saskatoon Saskatchewan working as a baker again. Anyways enough about me, on to the games I’ve been playing lately.
Recently I’ve been playing World of Warcraft. I’m playing on the Boulderfist realm on the alliance side. I’ve got a lvl 60 Rogue named Stinkles who I mainly PvP with, and a lvl 60 Priest named Weeples who I use whenever I feel like running instances. I’ve also got various other characters on other realms, but that’s the realm I play on the most simply because my brother, his wife and a few other friends play on there. For those of you who haven’t played WoW yet, don’t!!!! Wow is far to addicting and shouldn’t be legal to sell.
Teddy my brother tried to get me back into AoM/T, but it’s just too boring of a game in comparison to WoW or anything else I’ve played recently. I’d rather wait for the next decent RTS game to come out before playing anything competitive again.
Other than that I really haven’t been up to too much, a little bit of poker here and there, a little bit of babysitting my nephew there, and a whole lot of sleep.
Anyways anyone still come to this site? Anyone actually DL recorded games? If not I’m probably gonna redo the site at some point and just forget about all the old recorded games.

I’ve quit playing AoT competitively completely. I may play the odd team game with KS members but don’t expect to see me playing AoM anytime soon. The game has become far too lame and really isn’t about skill in any way shape or form, it’s all about abusing imballances in the game design the best of your ability. I find this type of gameplay too repetitive and not very rewarding, as well I don’t feel that the community in and around AoM is very solid anymore, most of the level-headed and truly helpful experts have long since left the game. If you look at most of the “experts” now they are all very full of themselves and very few actually try to help the community unless it will give them something in one way or another. I must admit the draw of money for playing games is a pretty nice one, but to be perfectly honest I have better things to do with my time at this point than to try to be competitive at a game that really doesn’t require a whole lot of skill (at least by my definition of what skill is).
For those interested I’ve been working at Relic entertainment for the last several months and the first game that I’ve helped work on has recently released a public beta. If you want to sign up for the beta go here, it’s an RTS set in the Warhammer 40k world. Anyways check it out if you like, I sometimes pop online while I’m at work to play against beta testers to see what exactly is going down you might catch me there…. then again you might not hehe.

I posted up a bunch of new games, mostly zeus but as well there is an Odin and a Gaia game (which are both team games). As well I posted a bunch of recs on the 15th for those of you who didn’t notice.
I have a question for you now, with my new set-up I’m able to double post by putting the same topic in several categories at once, would you be interested in me setting up a seperate set of links for the gods which I would then put my opponents civ into? That way you could easily find all the games I play against an Isis opponent for instance without having to filter thru all my other games (not that most of them aren’t vs. Isis) and looking thru all the civs.
Anyways let me know what you think.

I had to re-install again and ended up losing a bunch of recorded games unfortunately. As well in two days I’m moving to a new city and likely won’t be able to play AoM online for at least the next few weeks, therefore there won’t be any new recorded games, sorry. I’m starting a job with Relic entertainment out in Vancouver, and depending on how everything works out I may or may not continue to play AoT, I hope to keep playing but no promises :).

Three in Zeus and one in Set. There are a couple of decent ones in there. I have yet again reached higher and higher with my rating having hit another highest rating for myself (not ranking I’ve been higher several times) in the expansion pack. I hit a little bit of rating decay today which is why I was out of the top twenty for a short time, didn’t expect the decay as I had played within the time period, oh well. I’m finding Zeus to be a pretty good civ to use overall, however he does have his weaknesses it’s just a matter of making sure you’re opponent can’t play into those weaknesses.

It’s been a while I know, sorry for the lack of updates in the last two weeks. I was planning on updating near the end of last week, however I ran into some computer problems and wasn’t able to fix them too easily because someone had borrowed an important piece of software that I needed. Just today I hit my highest AoT rating ever of 1910 using none other than Zeus. All of the new games posted can be found in Zeus, Poseidon, Oranos and Gaia, most of the games are Zeus and I think there are some pretty good ones in there. As well I have this Random Game Pack from before my computer troubles. I’m not sure entirely what is in there and I don’t have the time to check them all out and repost them so this will have to do. As well don’t forget to visit my new MFO forums which will soon have an updated copy of most of some of my strategy articles posted on it as well as some other things such as the micro test etc.

Be warned VERY long game. Good start from me but I spend too much time without getting any land buildings up which really hurts me. Couple spoilers after this so stop reading if you want.
After my failed attempt to take down his titan (was really meant to delay him more than stop him completely) he said GG to me as if I should resign or as if he had the game won. Anyways about 30 minutes later after he took over my 3rd TC he yet again said GG to me. People like this kind of make me mad. It was a gg but that’s not why he said it, he said it because he thought I was dead and therefore I should have resigned.

This isn’t the big update I was talking about but it is a big update for those wondering :). Hopefully thursday there will be bigger update, not sure how exciting the news will be to all of you but I know for me personally it’s pretty exciting.

I don’t know what all of you think, but since I’ve started playing random civ I’ve found all my games to be more enjoyable to play and probably to watch as well. In the last few days I’ve had way too many games that would have normally gotten a spotlight, however I can’t spotlight em all so the ones I did spotlight are simply put amazing, if ever there was a rec game to watch the first two I list in the spotlights section have got to be the ones.

Easily the most amazing game I’ve ever played in, you probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you how this one went.

I prematurely named this the game of the year in my original posting. I now take that back as the game listed above this one is even better…. not to say this game isn’t great, because it is. Well worth watching.
Myself as Zeus vs. pG_Fire_de as Ra on Oasis.
Boy I’ve been having a lot of luck with Zeus lately vs. some very tough experts. This was a really cool game, I liked his villager attacks, lots of fights on both sides of the map very intense, worth a watch.

I know it’s been a while since I’ve done a full update, but I have been posting games on a fairly consistent basis as I play them for the most part. For those who haven’t noticed my KS_Josey_Wales name has dropped out of the top 20 rather dramatically. It’s simply because I stopped playing rated on that name. I decided that I much prefer playing random civ at this point so I switched over to my KS_Random_Wales name which has never had a game on it that wasn’t random civ. Today I uploaded a bunch more games from a variety of civs, as well here is a full list of my recent spotlight games which haven’t been mentioned on the front page until now.

A really good game worth watching, I thought that I was completely dead at several points in this game.
1v1 Myself as Gaia vs. au_cerebral as Oranos on Oasis
Hmmm to be honest I can’t believe I won this game, well worth watching I think.
Myself as Zeus vs. eX_Hope as Isis on Marsh
This is a pretty good game from the triple random league, I thought for sure when he got isis (ranked #7th and 10th with them) that I was probably done for…. things turned out a little bit different though.
2v2 Myself as Oranos and DBD_Mack vs. FoD_MsDolls(Kronos) and FoD_AssHole(Loki) on Midgard
This is a pretty cool game, I thought we had no chance in this one early on, but things seemed to turn around all of a sudden. This is probably the most intense game I’ve played in for quite a while, a definite spotlight.
3v3 Myself as Oranos, KS_Prophecy(Kronos) and KS_Machine(Zeus) vs. UW_Realm(Isis), UW_KapO(Isis) and UW_Rollerduck(Isis) on River Nile
This is game two from our rts league match vs. UW clan, they picked the map and immediatly I knew they would go for a wonder win. So we picked all the civs that would give us the opportunity to get to their side of the map to cause them plenty of problems. Ever see a player delete a titan on purpose? Here’s a game that’s definitely got it all.

Home: NW tournament a go…..

Basically everything is set up that needs to be set up for the tournament. There are still a few things that are subject to change, but hopefully everything will be ironed out by this weekend. You can find the tournament details here, thanks to NorseWars.com for the use of their forums for this tournament. Things probably seem a little bit rough, but this is my first tournament afterall and I don’t have a whole lot of resources at my disposal, hopefully everything will go smoothly.
In the last week or so I’ve uploaded plenty of games for your viewing pleasure including a couple of spotlight games. If I get more time tonight I will also post any remaining games on my hard-drive tonight.

In the last 3 days I’ve been posting most (not all) of my TRL(Triple Random League) games as they get played. There is the odd really crappy game that I’m just not bothering with anymore. I added some new games in Odin, Loki, Kronos, Zeus, Hades, and Set tonight. There are a few really good ones but none that I feel the need to spotlight. You should start seeing more and more games from all the gods pretty soon as I have joined the Triple Random League, it’s basically a league where everyone is forced to play random civ, random team, and on random map. I’m really excited about it as it’s a great alternative to the currently crappy rating system.
Now over the past months I tend to get a lot of people who I really don’t know asking me for games on ESO. Ussually they ask for 1v1 and I look at their ratings, see that in comparison to my own they are rather low and refuse. The reason for this? Well the game is likely to be rather boring for me and not all that fun for them either. If you are one of these people and really really need to play vs. me here is what I suggest. Join the TRL(Triple Random League). Find several other people who are a part of the TRL and then ask me if I would like to join your 3v3 TRL game. I’m still not likely to want to play vs. you 1v1 even in TRL, but a good team game is always fun and can be very challenging in TRL. Anyways just a thought.
The Norse Wars tournament is still a go, if you haven’t signed up yet I suggest you do. The tournament will likely start in the second week of january and run several weeks so that everyone has the chance to play (rather than a 1 day tournament that not everyone can make it to). I can’t remember if I posted this already but I plan to have each round run 1 week (like in every other tournament) with a slight change. If your game isn’t played by the final day (sunday likely) then you will be required to show up at XX:XX time to play the game. Anyone who hasn’t played their game and hasn’t shown up at the given time will be thrown out of the event no matter what. This is the only way I can think of to ensure that the tournament gets finished in a timely manner without too many disputes. As well it will hopefully make it easier for me to organize as I won’t have to decide every round who put “the best effort” into getting the game played as that ussually gets based solely on who puts the most posts up and possibly who can lie the best.

I added several new games under Isis, Kronos, and Oranos there are a few really good ones worth watching in there. I’ve kind of been in and out of the top 20 the last couple of days, but I guess that’s what happens when you only play on 1 name competitively.
If you haven’t already, then please sign up for the Norse Wars scenario tournament that I’m hosting. As of right now I plan to start the tournament in the second week of january. It will basically be done the same as most other tournaments with each round of the brackets taking 1 week to complete. The only difference will be that every sunday I will set a time for a “last chance” to finish off your game in case you haven’t been able to arrange a time with your opponent.

Just to clear something up for those of you who don’t know, Norse wars is a scenario, i’m not holding a norse civ only tournament (although you will have to use norse) for supremecy, it will be a tournament for the scenario Norse Wars.
I have decided that I will host a 2v2 norse wars tournament. What this means is that I’m going to need some help from a few people to help organize and moderate this tournament, so if you are interested please let me know. Hopefully after the norse wars tournament is up and running I will be able to organize a tournament for bloodsport as well. Anyone and everyone is free to sign up for this tournament (I plan on giving it a go myself). To sign up simply head over to here. If you have a partner already sign up in the posting for people with partners, if you don’t have a partner you can sign up in the other comments thread and I’ll match you up with someone (likely done randomly or possibly alphabetically or maybe even in the order you sign up). This tournament will be double elimination, I haven’t decided on a best of 3 series or just a simple 1 game series, so let me know what you think would be the best and most fun for everyone.
As of yet I can’t offer a lot in the way of prizes but here goes.
Prizes:
1st place team: a 3 month subscription to my premium service for each of the players. In the event that either of them already have a subscription they have the choice of either extending that subscription or giving it to a friend.

Home: Thinking of hosting a tournament…..

I’m thinking of hosting a small tournament, but not your average kind because that would be boring. The tournament would involve the maps/scenarios Norse Wars and/or Bloodsport and would be for teams of 2 or 3. If you think you would be interested in something like this then please respond. I’m not sure if there would be any prizes, it would just be for fun. Anyways let me know what you all think, I know not everyone has played these scenarios but they are a lot of fun and you should give them a try some time :).

You can find all the new games here, there are some Hades, Oranos and Kronos games. I’m basically caught up on my posting at this point, I threw out a few games that were too old or just plain crap, and from now on hope to be posting games as they are played so I don’t get so behind again.
Saturday I played in the finals of the Igames tournament, I had to go to regina to play and met a clan-member who lives there (we had met previously as well) who watched me play my games and ummmm cheered me on in a rather disturbing manner (that general is one weird guy!!). I finished a dismal 5th there which was unfortunate, but I think I could have done a lot better if it had been double elimination rather than single, but such is life I guess. So I ended up winning a couple of free games out of the deal as well as my previous prize of a motherboard/processor package which isn’t such a bad deal in the end.
I also managed to get back into the top 20 again, I’ve been dropping in and out of it now for the last little while, but feel pretty confident that I can hold on at this point as long as I don’t fool around too often with weird strategies, which isn’t likely because I like to fool around every once in a while. I beat GP the other day as Kronos which you can find posted in the new games, it felt kinda good to beat the (then) #2 player fairly handily :). Other than that nothing really new to report, I’ve got a couple of days off coming up so plan to do a bit of work on the site and hopefully get an example or two up of what I’m doing with my premium service. 8 games yesterday which can be found here, and 10 new games today which can be found here including games under Poseidon, Odin, Kronos, Oranos, and Isis. There are a few really good games in there that are worth watching I think.

This is a really good game, we agreed not to build titans which was fine by me because I rarely build Titans. Watch this game!!

Another really good game which to be honest really surprised me, I thought several times that I was done for in this one.

I posted 3 new ones all in Oranos, 2 are 2v2 rated vs. skwizz and the other is vs. capoch.
Now I haven’t played a lot of team rated so didn’t know how it worked but it turns out that since we lost our first game I lost 40 points and my partner lost 4 because he was rated 200 points below me (not a smurf just doesn’t play rated much). In the second game he gained over 40 points and I gained 16 or so, seems kinda silly for one person on the team to gain or lose more points than the other, but then again no one ever said self rating was a smart system either. Just my random gripe for the day.

I just posted 14 new games in Odin, Zeus, Kronos, Oranos, Thor, and Ra, hopefully I’ll get time to post a few more later today.
Also I’ve been in and out of the top 20 again in the last couple of days so things are going pretty good. However I’ve discovered that I can’t possibly manage to stay at that level playing a variety of civs, so my rated games will be mostly devoted to Oranos for the time being. However my team games will likely be split between the norse gods with the odd greek/egypt game thrown in for good measure.
I’ve also in the last week started my premium services and so far have gotten a good response. I’m hoping later this week to post up a brief portion of the first game review (it was over 6 pages long so I’m not going to post the whole thing) that I did so that some of you who think you might be interested can get a brief glimpse of what’s in store for you.

Oranos 1v1 vs. Mori_Fird as Thor on Watering Hole This is just an excellent game I think, I let it slip through my fingers through a couple of small mistakes and one very very large one.
